International
Accordion Festival, Blackpool UK
Contributed by Rob
Howard
The
International Accordion Festival, held at the Norbreck Castle Hotel
in Blackpool, England, from May 13th to 16th, featured US jazz accordionist
Frank Marocco as the chief guest artiste. Frank Marocco, apart from
his appearance on the concert stage and very popular master classes,
also delighted festival goers with some informal and impromptu concerts
with accordionist Harry Hussey, concertina player John Nixon, and
drummer Billy Thom.
The festival also marked a return to the concert stage after a long
absence of Rosemary Wright, former Principal of the British College
of Accordionists, whose commanding performance of classical music
was very well received by the audience. Apart from her concert appearance,
Rosemary Wright was MD of the Intermediate Orchestra
workshop.
Also contributing significantly to the festival was Scottish dance
accordionist, David Bowen, whose new CD On the Spree
sold many copies. David Bowen, accompanied on stage by keyboard
player Dennis Morrison and drummer Billy Thom, also led a Scottish
music weekend orchestra workshop.
